Bangalore is of course close to AnanthKumar’s heart. With some massive initiatives the face of Bangalore underwent a sea change in his tenure. As a Member of Parliament from Bangalore and as a Minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s Cabinat holding high profile and important portfolios AnanthKumar ensured that every single opportunity under every ministry was used to improve Bangalore, thereby fulfilling the promises made to Bangalore. AnanthKumar strived for the betterment of Bangalore and the results are there for everyone to see.
During his tenure as minister for urban development, HUDCO sanctioned Rupees one thousand crores to Bangalore Mahanagara Palike – by far the highest received by any city in India till date.
The list of projects AnanthKumar has completed is probably a record for any public representative in India. His achievements include among others
International Airport
Bangalore’s dream of having New International Airport at Devanahalli has been accomplished. It is the historic MOU signed by AnanthKumar with Shri J H Patel, then CM of Karnataka in 1999, which paved the way for Bangalore taking wings.
Metro
New railway terminal at Yeshwantpur has proved useful for the growing train traffic.
Work on Bangalore Metro – the answer for Bangalore’s traffic woes, commenced.
100 Crores support BMP
Initiation of Plan Bengaluru-2020 through ABIDe-Agenda for Bangalore Infrastructure Development. This initiative created by BJP Government of Karnataka at the behest of AnanthKumar.
Assistance of Rs 2,693 Crores from HUDCO for the construction of Flyovers, Grade separators, Cauvery III stage drinking water project, and other vital civic amenities.
Utilisation of MP Fund for Core Social sector i.e. Health, Education, Infrastructure, & other vital civic amenities for the people.
Housing
Construction of over 4000 houses for slum dwellers in Bangalore. The areas where these houses have been built are Someshawara slums in Lalbagh – Siddhapur; Agrahara Dasarahalli in Vijayanagar; Swagat slum in Tilaknagar; Gulbarga slum in Jayanagar among others.
Record assistance of 1000 Crore from HUDCO for the development of various parks across Bangalore, roads, footpaths, desiltation of lakes etc. 101 Nirmala toilets funded by the center, desilting and beautification of lakes like – Sankey Tank, Ulsoor tank, Yediyur lake, waste management programs, Multi-storied parking lot at JC road, electric crematorium at RT nagar, Magadi road.
His passionate vision for providing nutritious hot midday meal to all children in his constituency coupled with robust health and man-making education has been successfully implemented through his brain child – Adamya Chetana. The Anna – Akshara- Arogya projects of Adamya Chetana trust reach out to more than 80,000 children studying in 343 schools of Bangalore.

It is in his tenure that the major organizations got approval and funding to start regional centers. Like HUDCO south regional center at Bangalore, IGNCA regional center at Bangalore to cater to south India to promote culture & arts, Modern Art Gallery to promote artists of repute from South, Southern Regional Centre of National School of Drama (NSD) was setup in Bangalore, creating platforms to thousands of theatre personalities.
