As a social activist
Ananth Anna-Akshara-Arogya
Adamya Chetana
Adamya Chetana was started in 1997, in the fond memory of Smt. Girija Shastry, [AnanthKumar’s mother,] as a tribute to her indomitable spirit.
Adamya Chetana became an instrument for AnanthKumar and his wife Tejaswini to fulfill their deep sense of commitment to the cause of society, by direct interventions to bring about social change.
Adamya Chetana’s resonates with Swami Vivekananda’s vision “ Each soul is potentially divine”. What started off as a small effort, has today taken a mammoth form and has impacted lakhs of children across thousands of schools. AnanthKumar’s global outlook and vast exposure, coupled with Tejaswini’s eye for details and meticulous planning and execution has made Adamya Chetana a social movement that is unique in the country.
Adamya Chetana is a unique contribution of AnanthKumar & Tejaswini, members of family and friends creating a history of sorts, through their passion, commitment and hard work.
The projects of Adamya Chetana have impacted the nourishment, learning and health of thousands of under privileged children – Anna, Akshara and Arogya is the only agenda of Adamya Chetana.
As an NGO, Adamya Chetana feeds around 2,50,000 under-privileged, needy school children with Government support. The hot nutritious midday meal is cooked at four central kitchens, at Bangalore, Hubli, Gulbarga and Jodhpur in Rajasthan. With an innovative and path breaking approach, Adamya Chetana’s Midday meal program has become a role model for other Midday meal providers across the country. This has been appreciated gratefully by thousands of parents, children, teachers & the public at large. By the grace of Goddess Annapoorna, the quality of food continues to be of high standard.
Other activities of Adamya Chetana include a unique mobile resource facility “Aata Paatha” covering 30 schools & benefitting 8000 children per year. The uniqueness of this program is that, a mobile bus, fitted with educational gadgets like computers, sports equipments, costumes for drama, teaching aids, books, drawing & paint material, audio visual equipments, etc., visits two schools a day situated in slums. The beauty of this effort is that Aata Paatha uses non-formal methods of teaching to supplement school efforts in creating interest in education.
Tapping into their strong social network, Adamya Chetana today is reaching three news dailies to more than 350 schools, thus creating unique opportunities for school children to be abreast of the happenings around the world.
Adamya Chetana has been a torchbearer and has created a number of unique interventions which are replicable and first of their kind in the country. One such step is “Goade patrike” – the Wall magazine of Adamya Chetana. This colorful monthly wall magazine brings cheer to the otherwise drab walls of Government schools.
The rich experience of over ten years, paved the way for creating another unique program called Arogya Chetana. As a program focused on providing health to the school children, it was inaugurated by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and today benefits over 28000 school children, providing them hospitalization cover at practically zero cost. A number of children have already got the benefit of undergoing major surgical interventions practically free of cost. This unique insurance cover project was specially designed for Adamya Chetana. This program has a potential to cover millions of school children across the length and breadth of India.
www.raktadan.org is a unique website, an effort in using the web for creating a virtual blood bank for the benefit of those needing blood. Tailoring & computer classes for needy women & children have been going on regularly since 1998 & have benefited thousands of women in the process.
Adamya Chetana has adopted many government schools. The effort is to develop these schools in a holistic way – infrastructure, activities of children, teachers training and so on.
