Namma Metro NAMMA METRO FOR A TRAFFIC FREE BANGALORE The Bangalore Metro project, fondly called ‘Namma Metro’ is arguably one of Bangalore’s most ambitious projects. The responsibility of implementing the Bangalore Metro Rail Project lies with the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), which is a joint venture of Government of India and Government of Karnataka. Bangalore Metro not only adds to the beauty of Bangalore skyline, but immensely adds to the comfort level of travel. Besides this, Namma Metro is a major environment friendly addition to the Bangalore City as it significantly contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions. I have fought long and hard for the development of Namma Metro: I was involved in the first detailed project report submitted on the need for various mass transport systems. One of the cities on that list was Bangalore When I was the Union Minister of Urban Development, a policy called the National Urban Transport Policy was formulated where settlements with more than 10 lakh people in them would have metros I suggested the Nada Prabhu Kempegowda International Airport must be connected from all parts of the city by metro. This is also being implemented My suggestion regarding the Third Rail System- a method of providing electric power to a railway train, was also incorporated in Namma Metro Project details: The project has an East-West corridor – 18.10 km long, starting from Baiyappanahalli in the East and terminating at Mysore Road terminal in the West and a 24.20 km North-South corridor commencing at Nagasandra in the North and terminating at Puttenahalli in the South. This is the First Metro rail project in India commissioned with 750V DC Third Rail on Standard Guage.
